The heart of Livorno is the La Venezia neighbourhood, or rather the Venezia Nuova quarter – a fascinating, bohemian, lively area whose canals and small bridges, characteristic alleys and the striking Fortezza Nuova in the background, evoke the enchanting atmosphere of the lagoon city.
In the 1600–1700s the Venezia quarter expanded; many buildings were erected, including the Bottini dell'Olio – ancient oil-storage warehouses that today house the City Museum and the Labronica Library –, the Palazzo delle Colonne di Marmo, the Palazzo Huigens and the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, as well as religious buildings such as the church of San Francesco and that of Santa Caterina.
The most important event is EFFETTO VENEZIA, which normally takes place in the first week of August. It is a festival that, in the magical setting of the illuminated canals, combines music, shows, culture and gastronomy.
The bars and restaurants in the area set up charming outdoor seating with laid tables and open-air kitchens along the streets of the neighbourhood.
