La Venezia District: the origins of Livorno
The heart of Livorno is the La Venezia district, or more precisely the Venezia Nuova district, a fascinating, bohemian area full of life, that with its canals and small bridges, its characteristic alleys and the striking Fortezza Nuova in the background, evokes the enchanting atmosphere of the lagoon city.
The District
In the 1600s/1700s, the Venezia district expanded; numerous buildings were erected, including the Bottini dell'Olio — ancient oil storage warehouses that today house the City Museum and the Labronica Library —, the Palazzo delle Colonne di Marmo, the Palazzo Huigens and the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, as well as religious buildings such as the church of San Francesco and that of Santa Caterina.
The most important event is EFFETTO VENEZIA, which usually takes place in the first week of August. It is an event that, in the magical setting of the illuminated canals, combines music, shows, culture and gastronomy.
Particularly charming are the setups of the local bars and restaurants that fill the district's streets with set tables and open-air kitchens.
