Pontino District: working-class and rebellious
Pontino San Marco, two names for a single neighbourhood, born and remaining working-class, the spark and engine of every battle for freedom and democracy that Livorno has fought through centuries of revolutions and rights.
The District
Originally called Borgo Reale, the Pontino was one of the first neighbourhoods to emerge at the end of the eighteenth century outside the Buontalenti Pentagon; the route winds through the wharves of the wine cellars, the most hidden and unknown streets, the vanished ancient cemeteries and much more.
Every turning point in Livorno's history can be traced back to Pontino San Marco. The Risorgimento flames, the early twentieth-century uprisings.
A neighbourhood that has always been lively, dotted with artisan workshops of vanished trades and cellars of "good wine", it reaches its finest expression along Scali Delle Cantine where the colourful houses overlook and reflect in the canal water.
