Cacciucco is the most representative dish of Livorno cuisine. It is a rich fish soup with various types of shellfish, crustaceans and fish, served with toasted bread. Other iconic dishes include baccalà alla livornese and 5 e 5.

To taste an excellent cacciucco I recommend the Osteria Dietro l'Angolo in Via Carraia 14, which specialises in this dish. La Vecchia Venezia and Il Covo are also renowned for their interpretation of traditional Livorno cacciucco.

5 e 5 is a dish from Livorno's poor tradition: it consists of boiled chickpeas seasoned with oil, pepper and salt, accompanied by a slice of cornbread (called ponce). The name comes from the original price: 5 cents for chickpeas and 5 cents for bread.

The Pizzeria e Bistrot Chez Ugo in Scali del Monte Pio 35 specialises in gluten-free dishes. Many other restaurants offer gluten-free options; I recommend always calling ahead to confirm availability.

Prices vary depending on the restaurant. For a complete meal with cacciucco in a traditional restaurant you can spend from 25 to 45 euros per person. Simpler osterias and trattorias offer cheaper menus, while seafood restaurants on the waterfront have higher prices.

During the high season (June-September) and at weekends it is always advisable to book, especially for the most renowned restaurants. Many venues accept telephone bookings. In winter and on weekdays you can often find a table without a reservation.
